Khwai Concession

The Okavango Delta is one of the world’s greatest inland deltas, located within the Kalahari Basin. Recognized as the 1,000th UNESCO World Heritage Site, it boasts a wildly diverse ecosystem and is a top-ranking wilderness destination. This pristine environment is home to rare and endangered species such as rhinos and Pel’s fishing owls, alongside elephants, buffaloes, lions, zebras, and crocodiles.

The Khwai Concession is a community-run conservation area that lies along the northern border of the Moremi Game Reserve. This rich and diverse area covers a variety of habitats, including floodplains, woodlands, and grasslands, offering an incredible diversity of wildlife. The Khwai River, which flows through the concession, acts as a vital water source, attracting animals from across the region, and making it one of Botswana’s prime wildlife destinations.

The Khwai Concession offers a wide range of safari experiences, each designed to showcase the area’s incredible biodiversity. Game drives along the Khwai River provide excellent opportunities to see big game, while mokoro excursions offer a peaceful way to explore the waterways and observe the smaller details of the environment. Walking safaris are also available, allowing guests to experience the bush on foot, guided by experienced trackers. Night drives in Khwai are a highlight, offering the chance to see nocturnal species that are rarely encountered during the day.

Khwai is renowned for its prolific wildlife, offering some of the best game viewing in Botswana. The area is home to large herds of elephants and buffalo, as well as predators such as lions, leopards, and wild dogs. The Khwai River is also a hotspot for birdlife, with species such as the African jacana, kingfishers, and the rare Pel’s fishing owl often spotted along its banks. The diverse habitats of the concession ensure that a wide variety of wildlife can be seen year-round.
